Our June Class

Portland June 2012

Instructors: Eli Damon and John Brooking
Class, L to R: Dean, Judy, Theresa, Tyler, Frank, Sue Ellen, Sean, Liz, Jimmy.
(Not present: Zack, Jennifer)

Four students and a videographer from Massachusetts joined 6 Mainers and a special guest from Washington state in Portland’s first set of CyclingSavvy sessions for the 2012 season. After the Friday night classroom session and Saturday morning “Train Your Bike” session at Mill Creek Plaza, we took off across the “big bridge” (Casco Bay) to lunch at Becky’s Diner, where this picture was taken. Later, we sampled some of Portland’s challenge features, such as Forest Avenue and even the Franklin Arterial.

Theresa said “Thank you for making this training available and for your skills as instructors and cyclists. I loved the training and it has completely changed how I perceive and practice riding on the road in and with heavily trafficked areas. I have shared my experience with a number of people, some who are experienced cyclists, teach cycling and many who are new to cycling but are very interested to learn about the training.”

September!

We have one more set of sessions planned for 2012:

Remember that you can take the Truths & Techniques and the Train Your Bike sessions by themselves, in either order, but both are prerequisites for the Tour.

New to cycling? Not sure of yourself? Don’t feel ready for riding on the road? Absolutely fine to just take Train Your Bike, to increase your confidence for your neighborhood streets and trails. Then give yourself a month’s practice, or another year (we’ll be back in 2013), and take the rest later. Take the classroom anytime.

A geographical note

I had hoped to incorporate a Tour session in South Portland and Westbrook in addition to Portland, but time has overtaken me and made that not possible for this year. So the July and September tours will continue in Portland proper. But rest assured, you can take these techniques anywhere!

About the author

I've been riding my bike for transportation since 2002, commuting year-round between Westbrook and South Portland, and riding everywhere around the Portland area. My mission is to empower cyclists to confidently use all roads as equal drivers, enabling them to use their bikes for any and all local transportation. In addition to being a Cycling Savvy instructor, I am also a League Cycling Instructor and serve on the Board of Directors of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine.
