LEO to Cyclists: No law obligates you to endanger yourself.
Hi. I’m Sgt. Colby Lalli. I’m also an instructor of CyclingSavvy and IPMBA. I’m here to tell you that no law obligates you to endanger yourself for another road user’s convenience. You don’t EVER have to ride in the door zone of parked cars.
Don’t let paint think for you.
Thanks Colby and ABEA for spreading this important message, of the dangers of the DZBL!
This is ESPECIALLY important for riders (esp. older & less-skilled) on those heavier and faster e-Bikes!
See you in Dayton next year, for the 30th Annual IPMBA Conference!

Yellow Springs, Oh
Does this apply to Oregon?
According to ORS 814.420 (https://www.oregonlaws.org/ors/814.420), a bicyclist may leave a bike lane for a variety of reasons, which can include “avoiding debris or other hazardous conditions” [subsection (3)(c)]. We believe that the possibility of getting doored certainly constitutes a hazardous condition. The challenge is to ensure that this is understood by police officers who may ticket you, or judges who may hear an appeal. Also getting the general public to understand is of course an ongoing challenge.
