This special COVID-aware in-person session is for University of Florida students, faculty and staff who have satisfactorily completed Cycling Savvy Online Basics & Mastery on the UF Canvas platform. This all-outdoors on-bike session will take place on Saturday, March 27th, 2021 from 9:00am-4:00pm on UF’s campus.
Train Your Bike – Bike Handling Skills
In three short hours, you will learn to command your bike with precision and confidence. In this session we teach essential techniques for handling your bike easily and efficiently. The session is conducted in a parking lot. It offers a progressive series of group activities and individual coaching to build skills from simple balance and shifting gears to avoiding hazards.
Drills include:
- Start/Stop, Power Pedal & Balance Stop
- Snail Race, Slow-speed Balance
- Drag-race, Gears & Acceleration
- Ride Straight, One-handed
- Shoulder Check
- Object-avoidance Handling, Weave, Snap
- Turning: Slow-speed Tight Turns, High-speed cornering, Emergency Snap-turn
- Emergency Braking
Tour of Gainesville – Putting Skills & Knowledge Into Practice
We will explore UF and Gainesville as a group while stopping to evaluate and discuss strategies for safely navigating specific traffic situations. At each stop the group will observe traffic patterns, explore strategies, and then ride the featured infrastructure. You’ll gain confidence as you apply the principals you learned in Cycling Savvy Online and Train Your Bike.
NOTE: Due to COVID-19, this outdoor class has limited availability and all students who sign-up must agree to wear a mask at all times during class and to observe social distancing throughout the session.
