Your Bicycle and Other Equipment

What to Bring

For the classroom session, you do not need any equipment. For the on-bike sessions (Train Your Bike and the Tour), you will need the following:

Bike

For your on-bike sessions — the parking lot skills session and your on-road Tour — we suggest that you bring a multi-speed bicycle with street-worthy tires. Trikes and recumbent bicycles are welcome.

Please ensure your bike is in good working order. See the section below for more.

A Helmet

Our insurance company requires participants to wear helmets for all on-bike classes. Here is a short video on proper helmet fit. If you’re not sure how to adjust the straps, show up a few minutes early and your instructor will help you.

At Least One Water Bottle

If it’s hot out, bring two water bottles. If you don’t have a way to carry water, an instructor will carry it for you.

Snacks

Snacks are welcome at each session. Especially beneficial are snacks high in protein. You’ll be expending lots of energy. Plan for this. Biking is no fun when your blood sugar crashes.

Comfortable Shoes

We do a lot of stopping and standing. Cleated shoes can get uncomfortable.

Weather-appropriate Clothing

It’s better to have that warm jacket if you need it. Your instructor can carry it for you if you get warm during the tour.

Not Recommended

Knobby Tires

If possible, don’t bring a bike with knobby tires designed for off-road use. They don’t corner well on pavement. If that’s all you have, we’ll work with it. You’ll need to avoid all high speed cornering drills.

Clipless Pedals

Unless you are expert at clipping in and out — and it’s second nature — DON’T bring a bike with clipless pedals. We stop a lot. Students who are inexperienced with clipless pedals usually get to experience falling over in class. This gives our instructors experience using their first aide kits. Learning how to clip in and out is a separate skill to be practiced at another time.

Fixed-Gear & Single Speed Bikes

You’ll get the most from the bike handling session if you bring a bike with gears. Fixed-gear bikes aren’t recommended for drills, unless you’re proficient with stopping and high-speed turning. Fixed-gear bikes MUST have a hand brake to be allowed in our on-bike sessions.

To Get The Most From Your Bike Sessions

Ensure your brakes and gears are in working order. When you pull the brake lever, it should stop a two-fingers’ width from the handlebar. If it touches the handlebar, it needs a cable adjustment. When you shift gears, the chain should move smoothly with each shift and not grind or clunk. Make sure your chain is lubed.

Check your tires to make sure they have no bulges, cuts, or defects that could result in a flat, and inflate them to the pressure indicated on the sidewall.

We can help with minor tweaks, but we’re not mechanics. If your bike needs attention, take it to your local bike shop today!

Ebikes are welcome!

ebike class labels
Class 1, 2 and 3 ebikes* are welcome in our on-bike courses.

Please ensure your ebike is tuned up, your battery is charged, and your brakes are in good working order. If your bike has a hub motor, have provisions for preventing or repairing a flat tire on the hub wheel. There are many different types of ebikes. Your instructors may need a few minutes to become familiar with how yours operates and handles. Please arrange to arrive a little early for the bike handling session.

We do not allow non-classified or out-of-category motorized bicycles (electric or gas), as they are not covered by our insurance. It is your responsibility to know and confirm that your bike meets the classifications of a legal ebike. You may be turned away if you show up with a device that is out-of-category.
