Back when Dwight Eisenhower was president, I took off the training wheels and rode two miles from my home to downtown — and back. Ever since then, being independent on a bike has resonated with me. I have been bicycle touring since 1971 (including a solo transcontinental and some delightful tandem tours with my wife and son), spent a few wretched seasons racing, and played in the woods hundreds of times on the then-revolutionary mountain bike. These days, I ride for fitness and utility in eastern Pennsylvania, and try to have an overnight tour or two every summer. In 2014, I rode 100 km to my 40th college reunion. Despite my best efforts to have a real career as a journalist, bicycling became my work too. I left the newspaper business for Bicycling Magazine, left Bicycling for Bicycle Guide, and left Bicycle Guide for Adventure Cyclist. I’ve written two books about cycling. I am certified as an Effective Cycling Instructor; I have completed Adventure Cycling’s tour leader training (and staffed an Adventure Cycling tour), and I have worked as a forensic expert in bicycle accident reconstruction for decades. When I first saw Cycling Savvy, in 2009, I was stunned. This is a paradigm-busting program that teaches in a few hours things that we used to think took years. I’m thrilled to be part of Cycling Savvy.
