Like most cyclists, I spent a significant portion of my childhood on a bicycle. It was my primary mode of transportation before I got my driver’s license. I rode all over my small town, and even made an overnight trip with a friend. Later in life, when my children were old enough for me to leave for a short time, I rediscovered the joys of riding my bike. I live in a creek valley, surrounded by hills. At first, I would have to walk up the hills, then I could paperboy up the hills; eventually I could ride up the hills. When I bought a new bike, I was invited to my first club ride with the Cincinnati Cycle Club (CCC). Riding with the club, I was often told to ride on the white line in single file. A bit later, on Facebook, I saw a post about why a cyclist might be in the lane, and that made sense to me and I immediately began to practice it. This was not acceptable to many in the club. I am not sure how I first heard about Cycling Savvy, but when I looked into it, I was impressed with the clear, concise, simple and excellent content, especially the graphics. I joined the CCC safety committee and along with Jim Lindner, invited Tricia Kovaks and Dan Carrington to come and teach a ride leader course at which I became a club ride leader. After a year or so, I asked the CCC board to sponsor me to become Cycling Savvy certified and I was given the go ahead. That was in February 2020, right before CV19 restrictions began. However, Jim and I found a safe way to teach ride leader classes, using the GLC, and those classes have been highly appreciated. I also made a recording for the club (with CS permission) for our website on group riding. I am in the process of working with Tricia to host a full workshop in the Cincinnati area this year. The Cincinnati Cycle Club has the goal of adding one new CSI each year until we have approximately 10 CSIs in our club. I’m hoping we can add one this year.
